Amy Mark Dornbusch on DAF Giving

Amy Mark Dornbusch, Founder of AtlasDaughters and Director of the Marks Family Foundation, encourages families to activate their donor-advised funds (DAFs). Her key message: don’t let paralysis hold your capital captive.

Video transcript:

The role of the private philanthropist and family foundation can't fill the gaps of public funding and some of these larger, you know, institutional sources of funding. However, there is a that fast in first in funding that's a little more risk tolerant, comes from the individual philanthropists and the in the smaller family foundations. And that's a very important role to play. And so families need to hear that.

I think, when we think about DAFs, why are DAFs not being spent? Why is all that money sitting there? There's several reasons for that. One is, you know, families forget that it's there, right? But perhaps the biggest is really just the paralysis, right? So it's, I'm afraid I'm going to get it wrong. What are the values that are most important to our family? How do we identify the verticals, if you will, that we're going to invest in that work for all of us as a family and kind of speak to who we are? What do we care about? A lot of families don't know how to answer that question, what do we care about? But really it's just, it's that paralysis, that fear of getting it wrong. So I always say, Don't let paralysis hold your capital captive. I mean, the only way to really learn about this stuff is to start doing it right.
